A few weeks ago on my tumblr, I was asked a great question:
What books will fill my mermaid need?
This is such a great question! Sometimes when you're entering into a new specific book genre it can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially when that genre is mermaids. There is such a wide range of mermaid books since authors approach them in so many different styles but I think there's one for everybody, no matter what type of books you usually read!
'Ingo' is a bit of a younger YA series. It's about a brother and sister who live in Cornwall and discover that they have mer-blood. They meet Merpeople their age and have to help create balance and peace between the world of Air and underwater world of Ingo. Personally it's my favorite mermaid series!
Summary from Goodreads: I wish I was away in Ingo, Far across the sea, Sailing over the deepest waters, Where love nor care can trouble me...
Sapphire's father mysteriously vanishes into the waves off the Cornwall coast where her family has always lived. She misses him terribly, and she longs to hear his spellbinding tales about the Mer, who live in the underwater kingdom of Ingo. Perhaps that is why she imagines herself being pulled like a magnet toward the sea. But when her brother, Conor, starts disappearing for hours on end, Sapphy starts to believe she might not be the only one who hears the call of the ocean.
'Sirena' is an older YA with a main romantic plot. Greek mythology is intertwined throughout, which I really enjoyed. Donna Jo Napoli is one of my favorite authors because of her beautiful, lyrical writing style. It also focused more on the darker siren quality of mermaids (sailors, singing, etc). I'm constantly on edge waiting for a newly published mermaid book to match up in quality and depth with 'Sirena'!
Summary from Goodreads: When Sirena and her sisters sing their siren songs to the sailors on their way to the Trojan War, the men crash their ships upon the rocks. There is one survivor. Sirena defies the goddess Hera by tending his wounds and soon the two are deep in love. But does Philoctetes love Sirena's song, or her soul? And will the pull of honor prove stronger than the bond of love?
If you're more of a "Little Mermaid" fan, you'd probably love a good retelling of the story and 'Midnight Pearls' is exactly that! It's the best retelling of ANY fairytale I've ever read.
Summary from Goodreads: In a quiet fishing village seventeen years ago, one lone fisherman rescued a child from the sea. He and his wife raised the girl, Pearl, as their own daughter, never allowing themselves to wonder long about where she came from or notice her silver hair, usually pale skin, and wide, dark blue eyes. Pearl grows from a mysterious child into an unusual young woman, not always welcomed in the village. As all the other girls her age find husbands, she has only one friend to ease her loneliness. One very special, secret companion: Prince James. But their friendship is shaken when trouble erupts in the kingdom a conspiracy against the royal family combines with an evil enchantment from beneath the sea. Now, just when Pearl and James need each other most, bewitching magic and hints about Pearl's past threaten to tear them apart...forever.
Then there's 'Forgive My Fins'. It was not actually my cup of tea, BUT that's because I like to read books that are deeper and darker when it comes to mermaids. FMF would be absolutely perfect for someone who wanted a light, sort of fluffy read! It's very similar in style to lightness and fun of the movie 'Aquamarine'.
Summary from Goodreads: Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.
Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.
When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.
These four are the best sampling of mermaid books I've come across and you should definitely be able to get your "mermaid need" filled from one or all of them! :)
