Waiting on Wednesday: 'Tides' by Betsy Cornwell

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine
Welcome to my very first Waiting on Wednesday! I am very excited to be posting about a certain book releasing in 2013! It's called 'Tides' and written by author Betsy Cornwell.

Here's the summary from Goodreads: When high-school senior Noah Gallagher and his adopted teenage sister, Lo, go to live with their grandmother in her island cottage for the summer, they don’t expect much in the way of adventure. Noah has landed a marine biology internship, and Lo wants to draw and paint, perhaps even to vanquish her struggles with bulimia. But then things take a dramatic turn for them both when Noah mistakenly tries to save a mysterious girl from drowning. This dreamlike, suspenseful story—deftly told from multiple points of view—dives deeply into selkie folklore while examining the fluid nature of love and family.

Can I just say, that cover is gorgeous! From the summary and cover, we can tell this book will be focused on selkies rather than mermaids, however, I haven't read a good selkie book in quite a while now! I'm interested to see how far Cornwell takes the selkie lore in this book. The only thing that makes me a bit hesitant is the multiple points of view. I've read a few books where it really works, but most have fallen flat. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but I'll definitely be picking up 'Tides' as soon as it hits shelves next June! Will you?

Top Ten Tuesday: (Mermaid) Series I Haven't Finished

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
I thought it would be fun to start participating in a couple of memes throughout the week. I probably won't do Top Ten Tuesday very often just because some topics aren't really adaptable to my blog, but I thought this list would be fun! I also plan on occasionally doing "Waiting on Wednesdays".

So, most of the series on this list I wouldn't recommend, as I didn't finish the sequels on purpose, but there are a couple I just haven't gotten around to reading yet!

'The Water Mirror' Trilogy by Kai Meyer - While I did enjoy it and mermaids were present throughout the first book, they weren't the most prominent part of the story and I didn't feel like I was very invested in the main character's adventure, I didn't continue to the sequels. It's a great series though if you like Egyptian mythology!

'Siren' Trilogy by Tricia Rayburn - I quit this series because the first book was so predictable. It took way too long to get to the climax when the reader already knows what's going to happen to the main character. Basically, this series just offered nothing new.

'Pichi Pichi Pitch: Mermaid Melody' Manga Series - I've read a good number of mangas, however, when it comes to mermaids, I like deep and dark. Too fluffy for my tastes, though others I'm sure would enjoy them!

VIDEO: Meet the Florida Aquarium Mermaids

Check out this awesome video from BuzzFeed called 'I'm A Real Life Mermaid'. It features three divers at the Florida Aquarium who double as mermaid performers! Listen to them share their stories on growing up swimming, loving mermaids, and what it's like to finally be professionally mermaiding themselves!

I myself used to have a secret dream about mermaiding and who knows, maybe one day I will! But first I need to get myself one of those gorgeous tails. What do you think about mermaid performing?

      H2O: Just Add Water/Spin-off News

      The new mermaids!
I remember back in 2006 when I saw a TV spot on Nickelodeon for a new show called "H2O: Just Add Water". After seeing that first commercial for a television show about mermaids, I jumped around the living room excitedly screaming for a good 10 minutes. When the kick-off movie length episode premiered, I recorded it on a VHS and then proceeded to watch it over and over again until the rest of the regular season began. I was in love with the show and followed it to the end of season three.

      Mermaid Sirena
So, that's why I am super stoked for the new spin-off series! At first it was announced as "Mako: Island of Secrets", was then changed to "Mako Mermaids" and is now sporting the title of "Secret of Mako Island". Filming began this past May on the Gold Coast in Australia.

      Mermaid Lyla
Here's the show summary from the H2O Wiki: Secret of Mako Island centers on three mermaids, SirenaNixie and Lyla, who are charged with the task of protecting their magical Mako Island from trespassers, only to be thwarted by the arrival of a 15 year old land-dweller Zac – who forms a special connection with the island and is granted a fish-like tail and amazing powers. Threatened by his existence, the mermaid pod are forced to move away, abandoning Sirena, Nixie and Lyla, who in a bid for survival must get legs, venture onto land, and take back Zac’s powers or risk being outcasts forever.

      Mermaid Nixie
Sounds exciting right? And if that weren't awesome enough, there have also been several photos released of the three girls both hanging out on the beach and in full mermaid wear! It's definitely going to take some time for me to get used to the new characters, but I think they look amazing! I believe the pictures were part of an Australian magazine spread because a low quality image of Zac as a merman has also surfaced (on the right).

Also, there was another piece of exciting news for H2O fans a few weeks ago. New Video has announced that the complete three seasons of the show will FINALLY be released on DVD in the US on November 6th 2012! The 12 disc set will have all 78 episodes including the three TV movies, PLUS 5 hours of behind-the-scenes features! The set is available for pre-order now and is currently $89.96. That's a pretty steep price, so I'm hoping it'll come down before November...

Also, check out the box's cover art! My only complaint is the lack of Emma, since she was on the show for two seasons and Bella only was on for one, though I understand that four on the cover may have made them too small and that they want the most recent season to be featured.

What do you think? Do you love H2O like me and are you excited for the spin-off series? Let me know! Source

      Mer-Merch Monday

Every so often, I'll be posting about cool mermaid/sea-themed merchandise I find online. This week, I've been browsing around on etsy and wow there's a lot of cool stuff for sale! There were three items in particular that really caught my interest--all under $30!

First, this gorgeous piece of metal wall art called "Seated Mermaid" and created by etsy seller BCMetalCraft. In the description it says the item is made of heavy gauge steel and is finished with black paint. I absolutely fell in love with this when I saw it and am definitely putting it on my wishlist! How cool would it look up on a wall?! It's currently available here and sold for a reasonable $29!

Next is the "Fire Opal Mermaid Necklace" by Seyshelles. This shop also has a ton of other beautiful sea-themed items to check out! I love this necklace because of the blue accent and the fact that it's "clean". While I like mermaids, I don't like them to be overly nude looking--especially on something I'd be wearing. A piece like this would be a perfect gift for any mermaid enthusiast! Available here for $25!

Last up is this awesome "Mermaid Cardigan" designed by MartyMay. I find this design particularly attractive as it combines two of my loves, mermaids and archery. Adding this as another must-have to my list! Also available from this shop are T-shirts featuring narwhals, a seahorse, and an octopus. This mermaid cardigan is for sale here and only $28!

Did any of these items catch your eye? Let me know! Also remember that any blog feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I am just starting out and want to know what you'd like to see!

Never Read a Mermaid Book? Here's what to Read First!

A few weeks ago on my tumblr, I was asked a great question:

What books will fill my mermaid need?

This is such a great question! Sometimes when you're entering into a new specific book genre it can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially when that genre is mermaids. There is such a wide range of mermaid books since authors approach them in so many different styles but I think there's one for everybody, no matter what type of books you usually read!

If you want to read what I consider a "quality" mermaid book, I'd suggest either Ingo by Helen Dunmore (which is a series), Sirena by Donna Jo NapoliMidnight Pearls by Debbie Viguie, or Forgive My Fins by Tera Lynn Childs (trilogy).

'Ingo' is a bit of a younger YA series. It's about a brother and sister who live in Cornwall and discover that they have mer-blood. They meet Merpeople their age and have to help create balance and peace between the world of Air and underwater world of Ingo. Personally it's my favorite mermaid series!

Summary from GoodreadsI wish I was away in Ingo, Far across the sea, Sailing over the deepest waters, Where love nor care can trouble me...

Sapphire's father mysteriously vanishes into the waves off the Cornwall coast where her family has always lived. She misses him terribly, and she longs to hear his spellbinding tales about the Mer, who live in the underwater kingdom of Ingo. Perhaps that is why she imagines herself being pulled like a magnet toward the sea. But when her brother, Conor, starts disappearing for hours on end, Sapphy starts to believe she might not be the only one who hears the call of the ocean.

'Sirena' is an older YA with a main romantic plot. Greek mythology is intertwined throughout, which I really enjoyed. Donna Jo Napoli is one of my favorite authors because of her beautiful, lyrical writing style. It also focused more on the darker siren quality of mermaids (sailors, singing, etc). I'm constantly on edge waiting for a newly published mermaid book to match up in quality and depth with 'Sirena'!

Summary from Goodreads: When Sirena and her sisters sing their siren songs to the sailors on their way to the Trojan War, the men crash their ships upon the rocks. There is one survivor. Sirena defies the goddess Hera by tending his wounds and soon the two are deep in love. But does Philoctetes love Sirena's song, or her soul? And will the pull of honor prove stronger than the bond of love?

If you're more of a "Little Mermaid" fan, you'd probably love a good retelling of the story and 'Midnight Pearls' is exactly that! It's the best retelling of ANY fairytale I've ever read.

Summary from Goodreads: In a quiet fishing village seventeen years ago, one lone fisherman rescued a child from the sea. He and his wife raised the girl, Pearl, as their own daughter, never allowing themselves to wonder long about where she came from — or notice her silver hair, usually pale skin, and wide, dark blue eyes. Pearl grows from a mysterious child into an unusual young woman, not always welcomed in the village. As all the other girls her age find husbands, she has only one friend to ease her loneliness. One very special, secret companion: Prince James. But their friendship is shaken when trouble erupts in the kingdom — a conspiracy against the royal family combines with an evil enchantment from beneath the sea. Now, just when Pearl and James need each other most, bewitching magic and hints about Pearl's past threaten to tear them apart...forever.

Then there's 'Forgive My Fins'. It was not actually my cup of tea, BUT that's because I like to read books that are deeper and darker when it comes to mermaids. FMF would be absolutely perfect for someone who wanted a light, sort of fluffy read! It's very similar in style to lightness and fun of the movie 'Aquamarine'.

Summary from Goodreads: Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

These four are the best sampling of mermaid books I've come across and you should definitely be able to get your "mermaid need" filled from one or all of them! :)
